THE BRINDLE BULLDOG aka BUTCHER'S DOG
(Perro de Presa La Florida aka Spanish Bulldog of South USA)
Ponce de Leon landed
in Florida in 1513. His War Dog - "Becerrillo" (little bull calf) was
a small stocky reddish-brown chase type Mastiff, no larger than a Catch Weight
Pit. While red pups do throw out on occassion, brindle is dominate over red.
Becerrillo had a short, thick, tail that curled up on alert. Becerrillo also
has the under curvature jaw.
"Even if all this evidence were not enough, examination of the Butcher's Dog, or Bulldog depicted by Bewick and on print of latter times show that the varity of animal was, without doubt, a small Mastiff, with a compararitivly long head."
The Complete History of Fighting Dogs, Mike Homan, 1881
This original type Bulldog or Butcher's Dog was at best nothing more than a small sized Shepherd's Mastiff. The Brindle Bull is small in comparison to the larger Big Red Bulldogs and Old White English...
"Dogs this large have never found favor with those who work their dogs due to problems with lack of drive and wind (stamina)."
Colby
This smaller size War Dog/Cattle Dog, used to terrorize (some say this type gave rise to Terriers) and attack unruly cattle, dogs, and people (found in various parts of Europe) is often mistaken as the pure bred English Bulldog...
"Much can happen to change a breed of a dog in fifty years and by inbreeding and breeding with a fixed purpose in view, between the years of 1686 and 1735, a dog of definate type and of an average weight of 50 to 60 lbs, was produced. The dog of 1735, was smaller in skull than the Bulldog of today 1933, longer in face, higher in shoulder, not so wide in front, lighter in bone and body, and less exaggerated in every way."Our Dogs, Voss, 1933
The Brindle Bulldog is found working cattle and guarding farms along the Old Hernado de Soto Trail in South USA (La Florida) and is believed to be decendant of the Dogs of the Conquests...
My Brindle Bull line is constructed of 1/2 Brindle Bull with 3/8 WEB obtained from Mr Brack of Eastman Georgia (white/w brindle patches) and 1/8 of Carr White English, for good measure. My Brindle Bulls are not an Old Family line, but they do breed very true to type as based on an ancient genetic template most likely deriving from an island, as genetic depression/small litters is the norm.
The Brindle Bull, while loving dogs of little girls like Loura Ingals, can be a handful, and Ms Ingals wrote of this once common type Bulldog used on the Frontier...
