AMERICAN PRESA BANDOGS
Dr Swinford set out to recreate a War Dog by crossing the Presa Canario with the APBT - but this would recreate a Brindle Bulldog, as seen in the photos below...
"If such a one succeeds in getting what he wants in the first generation from what he believes to be an outcross, it is in all likelihood because what appears to him to be an outcross is in very fact not an outcross at all, and the two so-called strains are so closely related that the good results may be attributed to line breeding rather than to outbreeding."
The New Art of Breeding Better Dogs, Onstott, 1977
The American Presa Bandog is a cross of the "original type" American Bulldogs...
"Instead these dogs are used in the South, where breeders see a need for a powerful, aggressive dog to aid in the slaghter of packs of wild dogs that cause damage to livestock."
The World of Fighting Dogs, Dr Carl Semencic, 1984.
...and the Presa Canario ...
"What is known was the funtion for which these dogs were developed; guarding farms, struggling with cattle and the extermination of wild or stray dogs." Perro de Presa Canario
Wild dog packs had replaced wolves in South USA and elsewhere...
"By the same custom Alani gives an Alan, or in a secondary sense a cattle dog or mastiff, employed as a guard against the wolf."
The History of the Mastiff, M.B. Wynn, 1886
Micheal Hines of Memphis Tennesse has donated a fine Presa Canario for this program and crosses with my Bulldogs will be registered with the National Hybrid Registry. "Jehu" was bred by Pat Dinwiddie of Crown Kennels, and is out of "Caption Jack Spade" and "Jill Lee." "Jehu" is registered with the United Perro De Presa Canario Club.
